THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PALU' DI LIVENZA

The Archaeological SiteThe country of Polcenigo, very rich in springs falls, from a long time ago has been well disposed to human settling down. Inhabitants made their huts and palafittes on the bank of Livenza river, in a place called "Palù", the most ancient pile-dwelier hamlet in Friuli Venezia Giulia. and one of the most important in Italy. It's a Neolithic hamlet with evidences dating back to IV millennium b.C. Known since '800, it has been discovered by Canzio Taffarelli, because of a canal excavation. Since 1980, a lot of archaelogical researches have been carried out by the Soprintendenza Archeologica of Padova and then by the Soprintendenza dei BAAAAS of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Between 1989 and 1994 the canal-bed was excavated and a lot of wooden vertical and horizontal structures came to light. They were the remains of some huts built in a place with a lower water-level. The archaelogical evidences consist of pieces of pottery, lithic industry (arrowheads, sickle blades, polished stone axes) and wooden evidences (like a network of orthogonal beams, a semi-worked ladle of maple wood, and a piece of paddle), that have kept till nowadays because of the unusual enviroment conditions. About 3000 years ago, Paleoveneti lived in this place; bronze articles, lances, pottery end fibulae have been found in Palù.

Another archaelogical site, of great interest, is at the foot of S.Floriano hill, in S.Giovanni, A lot of evidences ( metallic and ceramic) have been found and they probably belong to a necropolis in esistence from iron age until IV-V century a.C.
