THE SPRINGS OF GORGAZZO
"Take
the emerald colour, the turquoise and the beryl ones, put them into a sea of lapis-lazuli,
so that everything mets and, at the same time, each of them keeps its own originality and
you get the colour of that piece of liquid sky called Gorgazzo!" This is the poetic
description made by Marinelli in 1877 about the springs of Gorgazzo. Its hollow was
generated by water erosion. Another important factor was the tectonic discontinuity: the
fault can be seen just in the spot where the spring surfaces. The spring is a very deep
siphon which has not been wholly explored. The surface pond originated from the collapse
of the vault under the thrust of water. The water origin is not well known. Nevertheless,
several studies have been carried out on the floods of this spring which undergo seasonal
variations; these researches are strengthening the hypotesis of an origin from high
places. There is also another hypothesis of a large feeding basin extending for approx. 90
sq.Km. But these suggestive hypotheses must be verified by the future research: it will
also give an answer to the several questions which still wrap this marvel of Nature in
mistery.
